OCTOBER 10, 2000 Legislators in Alaska said they are ready to lower the state's drinking and driving limit in order to comply with a new federal law. Congress instituted a blood alcohol content standard last week, requiring states to set a 0.08 limit or risk losing their federal highway money. Alaska currently has 0.10 limit and could lose $3.6 million by 2004. Of the 36 drivers who were involved in fatal accidents in the state last year, 21 had a blood alcohol content below 0.10, 10 were between 0.10 and 0.20, and five were higher, said Greg Wilkinson, spokesman for Alaska State Troopers, who support lowering the limit.
