FEBRUARY 7, 2001

Researchers at the Pacific Northwest Research Institute in Seattle, Washington, hope to use a collection of blood tests drawn from babies born in the state since 1960 in the fight against juvenile diabetes.

The institute will use a $1 million grant to use 50,000 "blood spots" from babies to identify genetic susceptibility for Type I, or juvenile diabetes. This type of diabetes affects children and results from the loss of insulin production in the body.

The overwhelming majority of Native Americans have Type II or adult onset diabetes.
