Governor seeks suicide funds

MARCH 1, 2001 Alaska Governor Tony Knowles is working with the Alaska Mental Health Trust and the Alaska Federation of Natives to create a suicide prevention council to combat the high number of suicides the state sees. The suicide rate in Alaska is more than double the nation's average, with Alaska Native males and young Alaskans at risk. Over the past ten years, nearly 130 suicides have occurred every year. Knowles is seeking an additional $325,000 for prevention in fiscal 2002, as well as $600,000 to replace a mental health center in Galena. Get the Story:
