MAY 18, 2000

Colville Tribal Court Judge Steven Aycock has sentenced Denise Ives to 20 hours of community service for using the marijuana within the tribe's reservation borders.

In the state of Washington, a medical marijuana law, Initiative 692, was adopted in 1998, making it legal for Ives to smoke on Washington state land. But since the Colville Tribe prohibits the use, Ives must travel outside the boundaries of the reservation in order to smoke marijuana, which she uses to treat irritable bowel syndrome.

Ives lives on the reservation but is a member of the Suquamish Tribe. She says she respects the decision of the court.
