MAY 3, 2000 The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe wants a long-closed mine to stop dumping waste waters contaminated with cyanide and other toxics on its ancestral lands in the Northern Nevada desert. Along with conservationists in Nevada, the tribe on Tuesday appealed a Bureau of Land Management permit that allows the Wind Mountain Mine to drain waste waters into the ground. BLM officials have said the practice is safe. The Nevada State Environmental Commission issued the permit to the mine in March. In related environmental news, the Senate failed on Tuesday to override President Clinton's veto of nuclear waste legislation. The bill would have created a permanent waste storage facility under Yucca Mountain, 90 miles south of Las Vegas. The veto was hailed by environmentalists. Staff and news wires contributed to this report.
