When Wauneta Lone Wolf-Cox was first diagnosed with lung cancer in January, the 50-year-old Lakota woman from South Dakota was reluctant to seek treatment using Western methods.

But after relying on traditional Native herbs and remedies, she said a Lakota medicine man told her to blend the two worlds. So she has started chemotherapy which is a companion to sweat lodge ceremonies and other traditional treatments.

In April, doctors told Lone Wolf-Cox the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and brain. A benefit is being held in Phoenix, Arizona, for her next Tuesday.
