AUGUST 24, 2000 Native Americans aren't the only ones battling diabetes, as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports a 70 percent increase over the last decade among Americans in their 30s. Nationwide, 6.5 percent of Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes. This represents a 30 percent jump between 1990 and 1998.
> The CDC attributes the jump to rising cases of obesity. The CDC also says the numbers may understimate the problem because one-third of diabetics do not realize they have the disease.
The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma just teamed up with the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center to fight diabetes in Indian youth. Type II diabetes is increasing among Indian youth as well as their American counterparts. Type II typically strikes adults.
