Child vaccines cleared in study

Research published in today's issue of The New England Journal of Medicine says two widely used vaccines do not cause long term problems in children even though they are linked to negative side effects.

Based on a medical data collected on 639,000 children, the study says those children who developed seizures as a result of the vaccines showed no future problems. The vaccines studied were the DTP, given for diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (or whooping cough), and MMR, given for measles, mumps and rubella.

In some cases, described as rare, DTP and MMR can lead to high fevers and febrile seizures. But the seizures are just as common in children who haven't been vaccinated, say researchers.
