WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8, 2001

The National Academy of Sciences held a hearing on cloning on Wednesday, with three scientists claiming they have made progress towards creating humans.

Other scientists, however, openly derided and doubted the claims. They also said human cloning is dangerous, unethical and not scientifically viable at the moment.

The House has passed a bill banning the creating of cloned human embryos for any purpose. The Senate is considering a similar ban, with an exception for the use of stem cells.

President Bush is considering whether to ban the use of federal funds for stem cell research.
