SEPTEMBER 11, 2000

A ban intended to curb the effects of alcohol on the Yakama Nation went into effect yesterday, still raising questions on whether or not the tribe has the authority to regulate alcohol on non-tribal land.

The tribe first intended to tax alcohol. The plan was met with opposition, but the tribe decided instead to ban it altogether, citing treaty rights.
