The Federal Drug Administration approved the controversial abortion drug mifepristone, trade name RU-486, on Thursday.

Already available outside the United States, it will be offered here within a month. It allows termination of pregnancy within the first 49 days of a woman's last menstrual period.

Vice President Al Gore said the approval was about a woman's right to choose. George W. Bush said it was wrong.
