Pueblos awarded domestic violence grants

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2001 The Department of Justice has awarded Santa Ana Pueblo and Zuni Pueblo of New Mexico grants aimed at reducing violence againce women. Santa Ana Pueblo was awarded $75,000 to increase support for victims of domestic violence and prosecution of their assailants. Zuni Pueblo was awarded $95,784 to support tribal prosecution of cases involving domestic violence and sexual assault, and for training programs and a shelter program. The grants were awarded through the DOJ STOP Violence Against Indian Women Discretionary Grants program. Reports have shown American Indian and Alaska Native women have the highest rate of intimate partner, or domestic, violence in the nation. Relevant Links:
