Recovering teen inspires others

MONDAY, MARCH 25, 2002 Susette Blackbird, a 17-year-old Cheyenne River Sioux / Omaha girl, entered drug and alcohol abuse treatment in November. She'll complete her program April 1 and is hoping to becoming an example for other Native youth. Those around her say she will succeed. They cite her strong mind, determination to succeed and her work in the Lincoln, Nebraska, community where she is completing her treatment. Blackbird has been spending time at the Lincoln Indian Center, where a program called the Workforce Investment Act helps Natives look for jobs and improve education opportunities. Get the Story:
