In The Hoop
THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 2002 Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues. I married an Indian man but all I got was this casino
The British tabloids, always ripe for tales about marital infidelities, are all over the latest divorce scandal to hit the United Kingdom. It seems that a Lynn Lever, 43, fell in love with a man she met over the Internet, packed her bags and left her two kids and husband to meet her new beau. His name: Marcus Guiterrez, 51, a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation of Kansas. Yes, it appears the two found love across the channel. According to The London Daily Mail (a version of the article is linked here), they met after Lynn posted messages to an Internet message board devoted to Native issues. Lynn, it turns out, has always had an interest in Native Americans. Her distraught husband, Gary, told The Bristol Evening Post: "She used to have a poster of an Indian on the wall, and a book on Chief Crazy Horse." So naturally Lynn was excited she found a real-life Indian. They engaged in a torrid e-mail affair, which -- according to the Press Association (copy of story here) -- included such tidbits as: Lynn: "I don't ever want to leave you. I want your baby as part of our life. We will be together soon. Someday we will be together for ever." Marcus: "I know I really do love you and can't wait until the day I meet you at the airport. There are no goodbyes for us. May Grandmother Earth provide all that you require to sustain a healthy and fruitful life." Lynn eventually decided to meet the man of her vision quests and left her two kids, Sean, 12, and Kyle, 9, with a neighbor. She didn't tell them, or her husband, she was going, but she informed her attorney, for some odd reason. She got on a flight to Kansas in September 2000 and was never seen again. That is, until police tracked her down somewhere in Indian Country. By that time, she had already Marcus, himself a divorced father. But then Lynn's visa ran out, so she returned to England, and brought her Native lover along. They now live together, although Marcus may have some legal status issues. "Right now it's up in the air," Marcus told The Daily Mail. "We are just taking it one day at a time." In Your Hoop
