FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2002

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Department of Interior contractors - It will cost "hundreds of millions" of dollars perform an historical accounting and much more to carry out trust reform and you, not Indian Country, will be the only ones to benefit from the deal.

David W. Tsosie - You're a Code Talker! Or are you? Like the trust fund, the government seems to have "lost" your records.

White People - From recognition to Klamath, the only people getting something out of these ordeals is you.

Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill - Go ahead and cry, we're not watching.

The Losers
Indian Country - You got the middle finger from Secretary of Interior Gale Norton and President Bush's new budget. Someone please call Ronald Reagan.

Secretary Gale Norton - Could your performance before the House have been any worse? We can hardly wait till you testify next week. Will you take the 5th or will you not recall anything?

Federal prosecutors - Your continued fight against the Santee Sioux Tribe is a waste of taxpayer dollars and shows you really have a vendetta. Get over it already.

Seminole "Chief" Jerry Haney - Does the "partial" recognition of the tribe's government mean only your hand is recognized as the chief?

In The Middle
Ernst & Young Report - Everyone wants to see you, but they'll be sorely disappointed when they do. Arthur Andersen anyone?

Tribal trust task force - You won't be a rubber stamp for BITAM but Norton doesn't plan on listening to your alternatives anyway.

Indian schools - Bush is ready to abandon you, just a year after pledging to fix you.

Pojoaque Pueblo - You can challenge all you want but you're going to have to pull out the checkbook sooner or later. Why pay your lawyers and the state when you can just pay one? Oh, and don't count on Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb to take your side.
