Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Ken Chambers - Still not officially recognized but back in power of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma. Watch out for the next Jerry Haney lawsuit though! It will be here before you expect it.

Indian Country - So much for privatization. But now you won't have to sit through even more meaningless consultation meetings.

Court Monitor Joseph S. Kieffer - You responded to the criticism with facts and ease. And thanks for the shout out!

Indian Students - Fixing old buildings is nice but more money should be directed towards you because you're the real stars of the BIA school system. We suggest bicycles and Palm Pilots for everyone!

The Losers
Department of Justice - So much for bringing in a new legal team to defend the Bush administration. We imagine you'll all get John Marshall Awards, however.

Queen Gale Norton - If you can't privatize Indian schools, you can still hand over broken down buildings to tribes with ease. Trust or treaty? Neither counts!

Indian Country - Another "culturally-balanced" waste of tax dollars aimed at you. The dollar tag ($1 billion) makes TAAMS look good.

Indian Students - Your tribal leaders don't seem to pay enough attention to you. But we know your grievances are very real and go beyond mere teen angst.

In The Middle
Minnesota tribal members - At least you know which traffic violations will get you arrested by state police. Look at the decision as an aid of sorts.

Prairie Band Potawatomi - Your land claim is very real but the state is still in denial. And will the Bush administration formalize its stance? We say don't count on it.

United Nations Indigenous Forum - A great idea whose time has come. But it may be too late for anyone to have noticed.

Indian Students - Don't worry, you'll be graduating soon and moving onto college where a whole new set of people won't listen to you unless you carry around a drum and hold talking circles.
