In The Hoop
FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 2002

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Idaho Tribes - Yet another victory for tribal rights. We hope this means the state will stop harassing you. We aren't holding our breath though.

Walker River Paiute Police Chief Ray East - Thanks for rescuing that young girl! But will this attention get more funding for tribal cops? Probably not. And will tribal sovereignty be fully respected? Doubtful.

Montie Deer - Goodbye! We know half of the Indian gaming world is cheering your resignation.

Alaska Natives - Congratulations on another We the People March. The state and the Bush administration will get the message sooner or later.

The Losers
Ex-Seminole Chief Jim Billie - You basically agree to wrongdoing but want to keep your job? What do you think this is? The Department of Interior?

Forests - The only ones getting "healthy" off this new Bush initiative will be the bank accounts of timber companies, some of whom exploited Indian lands. Where is the proposal to help the White Mountain Apache Tribe? And what about the Klamath Tribes' forest that was taken from them?

The Wall Street Journal - Could your editorial page be more anti-Indian? You champion bad business ideas but all of a sudden oral history is ripe for abuse.

Chickasaw Gov. Bill Anoatubby - Sorry about losing that new capitol vote. But we have word of your new Oklahoma City venture that the feds will be real interested in.

In The Middle
Tribes with D.C. Hotel - But will you ask Neal McCaleb to take the land into trust?

Navajo Nation Council - Just write a law invalidating the court ruling about your pay raise. It happens everywhere else.

Multimedia Games - Deer's resignation was just the shot in the arm your stock needed! Let's hope your upcoming court negotiations go well, even though you say Deer's departure won't affect them.
