In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means its time for the weekly list of who were the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Oil companies - For getting closer to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Those campaign contributions really paid off.

President Bush - For getting the House to approve your energy policy and patients' rights bills. And just in time for Congress' vacation. How convenient.

Robert S. Mueller - For being confirmed to run the FBI. Now get to work!

Alejandro Toledo - For being sworn-in as Peru's President. Now get to work!

Indians without electricity - For, in the words of Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.), not having the ability to watch C-SPAN and see the House fail to address the energy needs of Indian Country.

Racism - For being important enough to warrant an international conference but not so much that President Bush really cares.

Ietan Consulting - Congratulations on your new deal. We think.

The Losers
Native Americans - For having an identity crisis, at least in the eyes of scientists. Are you Asian? Polynesian? Let's call the whole thing off.

The Muwekma Tribe of California - For losing your bid to gain federal recognition. Does this mean the dorm named for you at Stanford University will go away?

Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb - For having to make a decision on two Pequot Tribes. We don't envy you.

Mary Sheila Gall - For facing certain defeat in the Senate. Who will blame bad parenting now?

Mike "Where's My Nickname?" Anderson - Don't K.Go hate, congratulate!

The Department of Interior - For conveniently erasing all those emails. And for not knowing (allegedly) when to respond to the court monitor.

Connecticut - For getting a new resident. There goes the neighborhood.

In The Middle
The Eastern Pequot Tribe, the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe - For being so close, yet so far away. Will you kiss and make up now?

Mexican Trucks - How about we just hire Indians to drive you? That would make Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) happy.

Inupiat Eskimos - So your land might be drilled. But will you get paid for it? Ask Auntie Gale.
