Tribal groups seek help against Taliban

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2001 Anti-Taliban tribal groups in Afghanistan are requesting U.S. aid in helping defeat their foes. Collectively known as the Northern Alliance, the rebel group is made up of varying tribes and ethnicities who control about 5 to 10 percent of territory in northern Afghanistan. According to their leaders, they have captured more land in the north and have been able to cut off Taliban supply routes. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld yesterday said the U.S. is encouraging the groups but offered no hint of direct support. Get the Story:
