Mob justice said fact of life for Mayans

NOVEMBER 30, 2000 Residents of Mayan Indian communities in Guatemala says mob violence is a fact of life in the highlands. One mob on Tuesday attacked and burned five suspected killers in the Q'eqchi' village of Las Conchas. Some residents there said the action was necessary in order to prevent crime. According to statistics, there have been 28 victimes killed by mobs this year, down from 48 last year and 52 in 1998. Included in the killings have been tourists, whom Mayan residents have suspected of stealing Indian children in order to put them up for adoption or sell them. Get the Story:
