JANUARY 9, 2000 Alejandro Toledo on Monday formally registered as a candidate for President of Peru. Toledo leader ran against ousted President Alberto Fujimori last year. But the elections were plagued with allegations of fraud and Toldeo dropped out of a subsequent run-off election. If elected, Toledo would be the first Indian leader of the modern Peru state. About 80 percent of the country is Indian or of Indian heritage. Elections will be held April 8. Former President Alan Garcia, another controversial figure, said he plans to run as well. Fujimori left his post last year amid political controversy. Get the Story:
