Disease still threatens tribe

FEBRUARY 5, 2001

A controversial book about a medical experiment gone wrong might have some focused on the past of the Yanomami Tribe of Brazil but today they still face the devastating effects of malaria and other diseases.

In the past 20 years, diseases have killed at least 3,000 on the Brazilian side of the tribe's reservation, which stretches into Venezuela. About a quarter of the 13,000 Yanomami on that side of the border were affected by malaria.

About a third of all Yanomami suffer from river blindness.
