MARCH 21, 2001

Lori Berenson, a former Massachusetts Institute of Technology student, on Tuesday proclaimed she was innocent of treason in a new trial which could see the imprisoned American finally go free.

Still, according to Berenson's supporters, the trial has been fraught with due process concerns. The new trial is a public, civilian one, as opposed to the secret military tribunal who previously convicted her of aiding the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement plan a thwarted takeover of Congress.

The movement is named for Tupac Amaru, an Indian leader who was executed for arising against the Spanish in the 1700s. Berenson has proclaimed entire ignorance of the group's plans and said she was duped by its leaders.

She faces a 20-year sentence if convicted.
