MARCH 8, 2001

The Great Council of Chiefs of Fiji met on Thursday to discuss a court order which declares the nation's current form of government illegal.

The 40-member council didn't make any decisions and planned to meet on Friday.

The Council of Chiefs once governed the nation in a traditional form of government. Today, they have little governing power but hold great respect and influence over citizens.
