Indians see no reason to celebrate
When Portuguese explorers arrived in Brazil 500 years ago, the Indian population numbered an estimated 5 million. Today, only 330,000 descendants of the nation's indigenous people remain. As the country prepares for its celebration honoring navigator Pedro Alvares Cabral on April 22, Indian leaders from 186 tribes have begun protesting the event.

Landless farm workers and descendants of African slaves have also spoken out about the celebration.
