Eliane Karp, wife of Peruvian Presidential candidate Alejandro Toledo was born in Belgium and is a naturalized American citizen. But she plays an important role in her husband's bid to become the first Indian leader of Peru.

As a fluent speaker of Quechua, the language of many of the country's Inca residents, Karp directs most of her campaigning towards the country's women voters.

In polls, Toledo trails incumbent Alberto Fujimori among Indian women voters.
