JUNE 2, 2000 Former Presidential candidate Alejandro Toledo renewed his call for a new election and announced more protests against the adminstration of Alberto Fujimori. The United States government failed on Wednesday to receive support from member nations of the Organization of the American States (OAS) over a resolution that would grant the OAS foreign ministers to take action against the country. The foreign ministers will meet in Windsor, Ontario, Canada beginning on Sunday and will discuss the election. Officials from the OAS said a number of outcomes are possible, including a request for a new election or economic sanctions agains Peru. At the Wednesday meeting before the permanent council in Washington, DC, Eduardo Stein, chief observer of the Peru elections for the OAS, said the process is "far from free and fair." Toledo boycotted the Sunday May 28th election, alleging widespread fraud. Incumbent Fujimori won with a little over 51 percent of the vote. Approximately 30 percent of the ballots were spoiled by protesters. Indianz.Com Peru Elections Coverage:
