Fujimori receives royal treatment

JUNE 28, 2001

His former spy chief has been led in shackles back to Peru but ousted President Alberto Fujimori is living the high life in Japan, the country of his parents.

Fujimori fled to Japan amid political scandals which Vladimiro Montesinos will now face. But unlike his former intelligence officer, he won't be sent back to Peru any time soon to respond to human rights abuses and other charges because Japan and Peru have no extradition treaty.

So as he watches events in Peru unfold from afar, he's being wined and dined by lawmakers and politicans and treated as the latest social darling in his new home.

A tough price to pay for a man who once pretended he couldn't speak Japanese. It turns out he's pretty fluent.
