Fumigation in Colombia protested

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2001

Officials from Colombia brought their protests of fumigation of drug crops to Washington, DC, on Tuesday, calling on the United States to stop funding a practice they say violates human rights.

A federal judge last week told the government to suspend temporarily the fumigation of coca and poppy crops with an herbicide. Indian communities in southeastern Colombia have protested the fumigation.

But Colombian officials yesterday resumed spraying of other non-Indian lands.

Indians in the state of Cauca yesterday blocked roads to protest the spraying.
