Indian rights law in effect in Mexico

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15, 2001

A bill that promised greater self-determination rights to Indians in Mexico but which has been denounced by leaders goes into effect today.

The bill, in the form of a constitutional amendment, is the result of just several months of speedy effort by Congress and new President Vicente Fox. But indigenous leaders say it does not fulfill the conditions to which they had previously agreed.
