AUGUST 30, 2000 Although not invited to attend the start of the United Nations for the Millennium World Peace Summit, representatives of the Dalai Lama read a statement from the Tibetan spiritual leader. The Dalai Lama was not invited to the first two days of the event for fear of offending China. He was, however, invited to the last two days but he declined and sent representatives instead. Over 1,000 religious and spiritual leaders from throughout the world are attending the conference, which began Monday and ends on Thursday. Get the Story:
