SEPTEMBER 27, 2000

In a report issued on Tuesday, the United Nations said the government of Guatemala is failing to prosecute persons suspected of ordering and executing massacres which killed mostly Indian peasants.

The UN Mission to Guatemala reported that the government has filed charges in only 10 percent of the cases brought before them. Of 20 cases the mission analyzed, only 2 resulted in the filing of criminal charges, and only 1 resulted in an actual conviction.

In total, a truth commission has documented sme 626 massacres, which have resulted in the deaths of at least 200,000 Indians during the country's 36-year civil war.
