Montana Governor Judy Martz on Friday said she would try and help the Little Shell Chippewa Tribe receive final federal recognition.

After being disavowed by the federal government for refusing to sign a treaty more than 100 years ago, the Little Shell won preliminary recognition last year. By doing so, former Assistant Secretary Kevin Gover rejected staff recommendations that the group did not fulfill all mandatory recognition criteria.

To patch up identified holes, the tribe has requested numerous extensions to the comment period. The latest ends January 2002.
