Shaun Murphy, accused of beating a Navajo teen to death, pleaded not guilty to first-and second-degree murder charges last Thursday in Colorado.

Murphy, 18, is alleged to have beat up Fred C. Martinez, 16, to death. Although authorities have not confirmed the death as a hate crime, Murphy is said to have bragged about beating up Martinez, calling him a "faggot."

Martinez has been alternately described as gay and transgendered.
