The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday upheld a more than $1 million jury award for an African-American man who was taunted with racial slurs at his workplace.

Troy Swinton was a factory worker at a plant in Washington. After he quit in 1997, he sued his former employer and won $5,612 in back pay, $30,000 for emotional distress and $1 million in punitive damages.

A three-judge panel of the court said the award was justified.
