Tribal members get share of money

OCTOBER 26, 2000

Members of the Catawba Tribe of South Carolina will each get $4,000 next month, taken from the tribe's $50 million land claims settlement fund.

The tribe was terminated in 1959. As part of their settlement, they received federal recognition and the $50 million settlement for 144,000 acres.

Of the award, 15 percent was supposed to go to tribal members. But it was held up because the tribe had to determinate to whom the checks would go.
