OCTOBER 26, 2000

The Department of Housing and Urban Development has conducted an audit of the Lummi Tribe, revealing a nearly $1.3 million discrepecancy in the use of federal funds.

The HUD audit from 1993 to 1999 says the Lummi Indian Business Council overstated its housing stock by 95 units, resulting in an extra $1.28 million in funding over the past three years through Indian Housing Block Grants.

The audit also found money from a low-income housing grant was used to pay the salary and other benefits of an employee who ran the tribe's closed casino.

The money can be repaid by reducing existing grants to the tribe or reducing funds from future ones. The audit was conducted in response to complaints by tribal members.
