WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2001 The trust fund isn't the only controversial issue the Department of Interior is seeking to delay. In court papers filed in federal court in Connecticut last week, the Bureau of Indian Affairs said it can't possibly complete the recognition decisions on the Easten Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe by December as a judge has ordered. Instead, the BIA says Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb can complete a process started by the Clinton administration by June 4. Former Assistant Secretary Kevin Gover in March 2000 issued a preliminary finding in favor of acknowledgint the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe, whose members reside on a state-recognized reservation in Connecticut. The state and three towns oppose the tribe's status and filed a lawsuit against the BIA. Get the Story:
