Conn. town joins anti-treaty rights group

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2001

A Connecticut town has joined an anti-treaty rights and anti-sovereignty group known for its violent encounters over fishing in the Pacific Northwest and the Great Lakes.

Ledyard Mayor Wesley Johnson urged the town to join the United Property Owners (UPOW) and the council agreed. He says he found out about the group a couple of years ago and joined himself.

A descendant of S/SPAWN, an anti-fishing rights group founded by former Congressman Jack Metcalf, UPOW has opposed tribes on a number of issues. Tribal authority over non-members, treaty rights and trust lands are the group's main sticking points.

Ledyard was in talks with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation over land-into-trust but has dropped out.
