Sandia Pueblo settlement up for review

NOVEMBER 16, 2000 The Sandoval County Commission will consider again on Thursday whether or not to endorse a settlement to end Sandia Pueblo's claim to the west face of the Sandia Mountains. The settlement was proposed by the Pueblo in order to end its land claim to the mountain. A federal court has agreed that the land belongs to them and that the boundaries of the issue be reconsidered by the Department of Interior. The settlement would keep the land under control of the United States government while allowing members of the Pueblo access for ceremonies. It would also prevent future development. Representative Heather Wilson (R-N.Mex) has been critical of the plan, which requires Congressional approval. The view of Senator Pete Domenici (R-N.Mex) has been initially negative. Get the Story:
