JANUARY 17, 2001 A special master assigned to the billion-dollar trust fund lawsuit on Tuesday wrote a letter to the Department of Justice saying a BIA employee informed him of the destruction of more than 160 boxes of government documents. The documents were reported to have been destroyed at the Northern Cheyenne agency but the Interior says they are investigating whether or not they were directly related to the lawsuit. Special Master Alan Balaran also asked the DOJ to report on efforts to preserve documents in New Mexico. The Interior and the Treasury Department were ordered not to destroy any documents after it was revealed employees kept destroying potentially relevant records. Get the Story:
