JANUARY 18, 2001

Two members of the Tulalip Tribes of Washington are protesting the double punishments they received for poaching elk on non-tribal territory.

The men had asked the state Court of Appeals to dismiss the convictions against them filed in Cowlitz County. But the court upheld them because they occured in state territory.

The tribe says its punished them because they have jurisdiction over hunting activities.

The men plan to appeal to the state Supreme Court.
