Indian impact on towns considered

The Connecticut legislature may look into the impact tribal casinos have on local communities in order to help determine if they deserve more money as a result.

State Sen. Kevin B. Sullivan of Hartford wrote a letter to North Stonington First Selectman Nicholas H. Mullane and told him of the state's concern in keeping track of the issue. North Stonington is one of three towns located near the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation who have said the impact on their towns has been more negative than positive.

Both the Mashantucket Tribe and the Mohegan Tribe contribute 25 percent of their slot machine revenues to the state. Communities in the state each get a share of some of that money, but since the formula depends on various factors, including need, the three towns receive less than other communities.

A recent study commissioned by the tribe pointed out how they have had a significant impact on the state's economy.
