FEBRUARY 19, 2001

The Connecticut Freedom of Information Commission has scheduled a March 9 hearing to consider forcing the town of North Stonington to turn over all documents in its fight against the federal recognition petitions of the Eastern Pequot and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot tribes.

The hearing is the result of repeated requests by Mark Sebastian, vice chairman of the Eastern Pequot Tribe. Sebastian has asked the town to identify the names of consultants it has used in fighting the tribes' recognition.

Sebastian says its a matter of public record because tax dollars are being spent on the issue. Town officials say the information is protected by attorney-client privilege.

The town has complained that the Bureau of Indian Affairs has been slow to consider its own freedom of information requests.
