FEBRUARY 27, 2001 Freshman Congressman Rob Simmons (R-Conn) on Monday said he will work to help resolve a conflict over trust land acquisition between the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and three towns bordering the tribe's southeastern Connecticut reservation. Simmons held a field hearing earlier this month to address the issue. He said he will now meet independently with tribal and leaders from the towns of Ledyard, North Stonington, and Preston to see what steps might be taken to resolve their issues. The towns and the state of Connecticut sued the Department of Interior for agreeing to take 165 acres of land into trust for the tribe. A district court agreed but last fall, the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the decision. The towns and the state have asked the Supreme Court to review the case. Get the Story:
