Towns disappointed with Pequot meeting

MARCH 13, 2001

The leaders of three Connecticut towns who have opposed the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation on a number of issues said they were disappointed with a meeting held on Monday with the tribal council.

The tribal council said they will offer a settlement to the towns of Ledyard, North Stonington, and Preston. But the towns said they don't understand how such a settlement could be offered because the council didn't provide specifics and refused to answer questions about it.

The towns and the tribe have agreed to meet again when the tribe is ready to make the offer. The towns oppose any attempts by the tribe to add to their reservation.

But they lost their lawsuit last fall which challenged the Department of Interior's decision to take 165 acres of land into trust for the tribe. They have asked the Supreme Court to consider reviewing the decision.

If there is no resolution to the issue, the towns said they will approach Congress to find one. The towns say the reservation's borders should be limited once and for all.
