Gift of eagle feather questioned

MARCH 15, 2001 At a meeting on Monday between the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the leaders of three Connecticut towns, Chairman Kenneth Reels gave what has been reported to be an eagle feather to North Stonington First Selectman Nicholas Mullane. Tribal councilor Michael Thomas on yesterday said the gift was an honor but North Stonington Selectman Mac Turner said it should be returned because Mullane is non-Indian. It is illegal for Americans to take, tranposrt, sell, or otherwise possess eagle feathers or eagle parts except by permit. Permits can be granted to members of federally recognized tribes by US Fish and Wildlife. Get the Story:
