Tribal court challenge due in Supreme Court

MARCH 19, 2001 The Supreme Court on Wednesday will hear the state of Nevada's challenge to the authority of tribal courts. A member of the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe filed suit in tribal court against state game officials for violating his civil rights. Officials on at least two incidents raided Floyd Hicks' home but never charged him with violating any hunting laws. The state believes its agents have sovereign immunity over actions in tribal court but the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals disagreed. Get the Story:
