MARCH 20, 2001 The Government Administration and Elections Committee of the Connecticut State Legislature on Monday held a hearing to redesignate the fourth Friday of September as Native Americans Day. The day was originally enacted in 1941 to recognize the contributions of American Indians to society. It is unclear why or when observation of the day may have ended or changed. Lewis Randall, chair of the Eastern Pequots' Elder's Council, testified in support of the plan. In separate legislative news, the Eastern Pequot Tribal Chairwoman Mary Sebastian testified on Monday before the Environment Committee against a bill that would require the state to consider any gaming compact that doesn't require the tribe to recognize and agree to all state Department of Environmental Protection rules and regulations.
