MARCH 26, 2001

The prison population in the United States is still at a record high, according to statistics released by the Department of Justice on Sunday.

As of June 2000, 1,931,859 people were incarcerated in federal, state, and local prisons. This is a 3 percent increase from June 1999.

Overall, the rate of growth was 3 percent, the lowest rate in 30 years.

The report released yesterday does not break out individual statistics for American Indian prisoners. Tribal jails in Indian Country are usually the subject of a separate DOJ report.
